We speculated as to what the lights might be but subsequently discovered that they have been put there for the 2015 celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the first ascent of the Matterhorn. It appears that they were just trying them out. Given that the anniversary wasn’t for another ten months, they were definitely getting ahead of the game.
