Thursday - Today is the day I'm planning to hike up Mont Vallon. As the owner of the hotel is also a mountain guide, I reckon it's worth soliciting some advice from him before I set off. His advice is "don't walk up Mont Vallon, it's a rubbish walk and not worth the effort for the view from the top". Doh! I'd been quite looking forward to that. He suggests instead that if I fancy a challenge, I should take the trail up to Col du Fruit and walk along the ridge to Saulire, where I walked to yesterday. Despite the fact that I really want to walk up Mont Vallon (because it's the highest point in the area), I don't feel that I can ask his advice and then completely ignore it, so I head off for Col du Fruit.
From Merribel Mottaret, it's a lovely walk along the mountainside, through flower covered meadows to the trail that climbs the moutainside to Col du Fruit, which you can just about make out here on the left, in front of the scree slope.
