Coast

Having left the caves, we decide to drive west along the coast. Most of the road has been upgraded and stuck in tunnels through the cliffs. However, the old road still exists and a section of it is visible here on the left, clinging to the cliff face. The wide and new looking bit you can see near the middle of the photo is indeed a wide and new bit.

There is a sign at the start of each section of old road saying that they are considered dangerous and that you travel on them at your own risk. They're not kidding either as the roads are strewn with some disturbingly large rocks that would likely make short work of the roof of our hire car. On one stretch of road we had to drive through a couple of waterfalls that were cascading onto the road. Some of the sections of road are closed completely. It must have been very exciting (!) when that was the only road across the north of the island. I can see why much of the north coast was, until recently, considered to be very remote and inaccessible despite being less than 40 miles from Funchal.

From this view point, the small town of Seixal is visible in the distance.
