Brugge Judith still had a couple of her Eurotunnel frequent traveler tickets to use and not a lot of time left to use them, so we thought it might be nice to spend the weekend in Brugge. Having been so many times before, I tried very hard not to take pictures of things I’ve already taken loads of pictures of before.
Eurotunnel My Honda on the Eurotunnel.
Kempinski Hotel As our usual haunt, the Novotel, was fully booked, Judith decided to go bonkers and book us into the Kempinski Dukes Palace Hotel - “Brugge’s only luxury 5-star hotel” according to their web site. And very nice it was too. This is the garden of the Hotel. Very peaceful and secluded considering that it’s right in the middle of Brugge.
Window A stained glass window in the Kempinski Hotel with Judith's initials on it.
Art Geometric art in the garden of the hotel.
Church of Our Lady A nice view of the tower of the Church of Our Lady.
Church of Our Lady I was trying not to take pictures of buildings, but this looked so nice framed against the blue sky.
Cambrinus Judith perusing the beer menu in the Cambrinus bar/restaurant on Philipstockstraat (just up the road from the wonderful Beer Tempel). With over 400 beers, it’s well worth a visit. And the food’s pretty nice too.
Waffles Judith looking like she’s enjoying her waffles.
Boats A nice picture of some boats moored by Greonerei early on Sunday morning.
Brewery On Sunday morning we did a tour of the Henri Maes Brewery, which is the only brewery still actually making beer in Brugge. It only cost EUR5 to do the 45 minute tour and for that you also get a complimentary glass of Zot at the end. Given that Zot costs about EUR3 in a bar, I reckon that makes the tour pretty good value indeed.
Sculpture A sculpture of the Henri Maes man-in-the-moon logo in the courtyard outside the brewery.
Cans The brewery collects beer cans from around the world. This is just a tiny selection in a room full of them. The tour guide reckons that Belgians only put beer they’re planning to export into cans and that real beer should live in a bottle.
View The view from the roof of the Henri Maes Brewery. As there aren’t many places in Brugge that you can get up hight for a view, it’s probably worth the EUR5 cost of the tour just for this.
Bottles A wall of empty bottles in the cellar of the Henri Maes Brewery. That would make nice desktop wallpaper I reckon.
Statue This is a picture of the statue in the small square on Walplein, just outside the Henri Maes Brewery. I’ve been trying to get a good picture of it for ages, but they never seem to come out quite right. I reckon this is my best effort to date.
Damme On Sunday afternoon we went to Damme, which is a lovely little town a couple of miles along the canal to the north-east of Brugge. This is a view of Damme from the 44 meter tower of the Onze Lieve Vrouw church. It only cost EUR1 to get up here.
Tower The Onze Lieve Vrouw church tower.
Windmill A windmill on the canal in Damme.
