Port Zelande (Center Parcs) A long weekend at a Center Parcs on the North Sea coast in December was always likely to be a bit hit and miss. The fact that I had a stinking cold didn’t help. It also turned out to be a lesson in not putting too much faith in GPS navigation. Judith’s car happily directed us to what turned out to be a foot ferry for the crossing of the Westerschelde from Het Heem to Vlissingen. We then used our (several years old) map of Europe to make our way the 33 miles to Hontenisse for the car ferry, which, it turned out, had been replaced with a super new tunnel at Terneuzen some years earlier. The moral of the story seems to be, whatever form of mapping you use, make sure it’s up-to-date.
Port Zelande Center Parcs is built by a marina on Grevelingenmeer Lake, which is nice. The weather was holding up quite well too at this point, although there was a bracing northerly wind blowing in off the North Sea.
Cruising There are mini-”cruises” on Grevelingenmeer Lake, for those interested in that sort of thing.
Marina The Sun’s struggling to shine through the gathering clouds now.
Beach It’s only a short walk to the beach. I can imagine that this is really nice on a warm, sunny day.
Zierikzee On Sunday, as the weather had improved again, we went for a drive to the picturesque town of Zierikzee.
Zierikzee
Church The town’s church is probably its most dominant feature. Although not as dominant as it might have been, given that it was originally planned to be twice as tall, but they ran out of cash. You can just see Judith.
Church The church at Zierikzee again.
Art Nice whirly thing.
Fishing Boats
Judith Judith seems to be enjoying herself.
Windmill Being in the Netherlands, they were bound to have a windmill.
