Corfe Castle On the spur of the moment (and mainly because the weather forecast for the weekend was so good), we decided to spend one night in Morton’s House Hotel in Corfe Castle, Dorset. Super location, super hotel, super food (2 AA rosette restaurant) and super weather. Altogether it was pretty super.
Corfe Castle The castle itself. Very scenic, but not a lot to do. Particularly as the top bit was closed for essential maintenance.
Corfe Castle Just to prove that Judith at least was there.
Corfe Castle This was about as close as it was possible to get to the main keep.
Tower When the castle was captured (in 1647 I think), someone had the bright idea of blowing it up. So they started to dig under the walls to plant explosive charges. However, while they were digging, one side of this tower collapsed 10 feet down the hillside, crushing two of the mischief makers in the process. Impressively, apart from cracking in the middle, the rest of it has remained intact since. Now that’s workmanship.
East Hill Judith on East Hill, opposite Corfe Castle. I had a feeling that this was, in some way, artistic. But now I’m not so sure. There was a really nice view of Corfe Castle behind me, but the sun was a bit too much in my line of fire for a decent photo opportunity.
East Hill Judith walking back down East Hill, having had her photograph taken.
Globe The stone (concrete?) globe at Durlston Head. By the way, don’t come here with the intention of going to the Tilly Whim Caves. They’ve apparently been closed since 1976. They don’t mention that in the brochure.
Sunset Sunset at the lighthouse at Durlston Head. What this picture doesn’t convey is quite how incredibly cold the wind blowing in from the sea was. Brrrrr.
Lulworth Crumple Something to do with the way three rock types have been twisted (in the middle you can see the vertical strata that would originally have been horizontal) and subsequently eroded. Very scenic though.
Cliffs On the way from Lulworth Cove to Durdle Door. If you’re ever in the Bournemouth/Poole area, I strongly recommend a trip down here. It’s some of the best scenery I’ve seen (so far) in Britain.
Beach The beach at Durdle Door. This place must get absolutely packed in the summer.
Beach The beach at Durdle Door. Again. Judith in the distant foreground.
Judith Judith begging to have her photo taken again.
Cliffs This far up the beach, out of the shelter of Durdle Door itself, it was starting to get really windy and really cold.
Durdle Door Durdle Door itself. Quite sheltered and pleasant down this end of the beach.Time to go home. The End.
